Stainless steel was discovered by accident in England in 1912. Harry Brearley invented stainless steel, but it wasn’t his intention, it was a complete accident. Harry Brearley was working for a gun manufacturer trying to find a more wear-resistant material. The inner diameter of the barrel was wearing out too quickly due to heat and outgassing. He tried adding 10-20% chromium to the steel.
Instead of properly disposing of the failed batches, he discarded them. After a few months, he discovered stainless steel when he realized that the guns were not rusting.
Others say that when trying to analyze steel/chromium mixtures under a microscope, he first needed to corrode them with nitric acid, which he found to be extremely corrosion-resistant.
The scientist Brearley named his new invention “Stainless Steel”, which didn’t sit well with the businessman Stewart, so he changed it to “Stainless Steel”, which is used to this day. This name has been used to this day.
